The current Spanish country has been influenced by a diverse history which features a multitude of rulers. As per the history, around the 6th Century BC, the Iberians and Celts walked the hallowed lands. Hence the name Iberian Peninsula. However, the Romans started invading and decided to stay in the place. But later, they saw the land collapsing and being inhabited by numerous German Tribes, the Visigoths among them.

Then in 711 CE, the Moors came in with their gallant leader in Tariq ibn Ziyad who jumped over the Strait of Gibraltar and started a period dominated by Islamic rule in the major parts of the Peninsula. Afterwards in the 8th Century, the Christian reconquest came and battled the Moors till 1492, courtesy of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella.

The Spanish Empire grew exponentially to reach its peak during the 16th century. This is also the time when explorers of Spain (Christopher Columbus) roamed the world to change history and in the 17th Century it became the part of European powers.

Spain has become quite cosmopolitan over the years like the many European neighbours it has. This makes the atmosphere quite warm and welcoming for tourists regardless of where they are travelling from.

Spain also has many aspects that are listed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. They include Timber Rafting which sees lumberjacks travel great distances on rafts to gather wood. They use natural waterways to transport the timberback to base. Manual bell-ringing may not sound like much but it has always been a big part of this country. It has been used as a way to share information about important events, signals, etc. The sounds can be tuned to relay different messages as well.

Language

You must know a bit about the ways of communication in this region. The country has five major languages which include- Catalan, Aranese, Basque (Euskara), Galician and Spanish. Tourists who do not know any of these should not be worried as understanding English is becoming quite prevalent throughout.

While communicating, Spaniards like to maintain eye contact and stand close. The former habit lasts quite a bit longer than is known in other cultures. If you have trouble understanding the things being said, try to read the facial expressions and exaggerated hand gestures. They are very present and are quite easy to read. Do not get scared or act out if the locals speak or laugh loudly, it's just natural there. Strangely enough, while pointing at people is considered rude, staring at them will get you off lightly.
