Top destinations in Maldives

The Maldives is an archipelago which has more than 1000 islands and 26 coral atolls. So there are no cities in the traditional sense. However, the two main named cities are Malè and Addu City. Here are some facts about the two.

  • Malè: This is the capital city of the Maldives and home to the most number of people as well. It is the trade, cultural, economic and historical centre of this region. All the government institutions are based in this city and some of them sport stunning architecture which dates back centuries. You can find the Grand Friday Mosque which is traditionally known as Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam in this city
  • Addu City (Seenu Atoll):Addu City or the Seenu Atoll is the southernmost part of the Maldives and also the second most populated area in the country. This famed atoll was once a base of operations for the Royal British Force during the second World War. Visitors can still see many sights in this region which can take them back to the era of the great wars. This region is also known for its ecotourism with its thick green forests, richly diverse marine life and historical installations.
  • Fuvahmulah City: Also located on the southern side of the Maldives, Fuvahmulah is basically an independent island that has city status. This is an unique location as it sports atypical geographical features like a freshwater lake, coral reef barrier on all sides and very dense foliage. Additionally, this region also has its own Dhivehi dialect which is only spoken here. Local customs are also quite different from the rest of the country.
