Rejoice! As now you don’t have to wait for the five accessible months in a year to head off to Leh. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has understood our needs and decided to give us a railway line to Leh.
The Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line will be the first and highest railway track to Leh, situated at the height of 3300 metres above sea level.
This all-weather train connectivity is one of the major projects identified by the defense minister along the China Border and Its final location survey was inaugurated on June 27 at an estimated cost of 157.77 crore.
The construction work will commence only after the completion of the location survey which is being funded by the Defence Ministry.
The location survey has been delegated to RITES Limited, a Railway PSU.
"RITES has deployed its expert team to carry out this challenging task. The survey will be carried out in three phases and is slated to be completed by 2019," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
The train will start from Bilaspur and pass through Sunder Nagar Mandi, Manali, Tandi, Keylong, Darcha, Koksat, Upshi and Karu to finally reach Leh.
The route is being constructed mainly for the easy and smooth transfer of the Personnel and equipment to the military base of Leh. Apart from that, it will provide great socio-economic benefits, including tourism in the region.
Currently roads are the most preferred means of transport for people travelling to Leh and they remain functional only for 5 months in a year. The start of this scenic railway line will be of great use to everyone.
