The comfort, interiors and amenities of Palace on Wheels make it one of most prominent luxury trains of the world. Every fragment of this luxury train shares an exciting story about its existence. The history of Palace on Wheels is something that you would to know about. Prior to the freedom of India, this kind of luxury train having traditionally designed coaches was preferably used by the rulers of Gujarat and Rajasthan, the Viceroy of British India and the Nizam of Hyderabad. So, each carriage of this luxury train has its own unique history.
Post freedom of India, Indian Railways discontinued the use of those extraordinary coaches as it wasn't practical to include them in normal passenger trains. It is the matter of 1981 and 1982 when Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways decided to start a new venture with a purpose to offer exclusive heritage tours for the visitors of Rajasthan. Thus, the Palace on Wheels embarked on its first journey on 26th January, 1982 from Delhi by a steam engine.
Later, time and again, RTDC and the Indian Railways together done several infrastructural changes in the splendid coaches of the Palace on Wheels train to make it more comfortable for guests while maintaining its royal aesthetics.
Launching of a new AC meter gauge in this old heritage town was the next big highlight for this unbeatable train. This new type of the luxury train has 14 saloons, one bar cum lounge, 2 restaurants with kitchen cars and 4 service cars. Each of these saloons had 4 fully equipped cabins having shower facilities. The concept of personal attendants was introduced too for making journey more comfortable.
Recently in the year 2009, the latest changes were done in the train service. The train was re-launched and refurbished in August 2009 along with elite imperial decor, collection of delicious food and itinerary.
