To promote a cruise tour in the state, Kerala Tourism is now presenting a river cruise to the holidaymakers to explore the northern districts of the state. Christened 'Malanadu Cruise' connects eight rivers and backwaters of Kannur and Kasargod districts by surrounding the socio-cultural attractions of North Malabar.
This is Rs. 400 crores project that aims to showcase the untapped tourism potential from the upcoming Kannur International Airport to Bekal. For the cruise, 11 different tourism themes have been selected. These themes are Akshagana, Birds and Agri Cruise, Coastal Village, Handicraft, Mangrove, Theyyam, Malabari (Muthappan), River Bathing with Water Sports, Pazhassi Raja and Martial Arts.
The longest cruise route is 37 km, which travels from Munambukadavu to Valapattanam and the Birds and Agri-cruise from Munderikadavu to Valapattanam, both along the Valapattanam River. The smallest route of the trip is 15 km, which is from the Thekkil Bridge to Thalangara along the Chandragiri River and Martial Arts Cruise from Peringathur to Mahe along the Mahe River.
The main purpose of this new novel project is to expose the tourists with the new traditions, culture and cuisines of the state along with exploring the picturesque landscape and rustic beauty of Kerala. The 270 km cruise-route will also generate employment for the local people while promoting the local handicrafts and handloom.
