This fairy-tale village was founded in1230 by some refugee from the south who came to this region to look for the new settlement. After coming they saw a huge number of goat horns which was lying there after a big flood. Seeing this the place got named 'Giethoorn, meaning the horn of goats'.
The inhabitants of the place found several peat deposits and dug many holes over the years, which eventually has turned into Lakes and canals as of now. One can go from one house to another only through 50 wooden bridges that are there for the connectivity.
