The government has given its approval for the first ever railway line connecting these two important centers in the Andamans. A 240 km broad- gauge track will soon be laid, joining Diglipur in North Andaman Island with its capital, Port Blair. The line is expected to run parallel to the coast through a number of bridges and will take around three hours, making it a lot easier for tourists and local people to travel.
Currently the 350 km distance by bus takes over 14 hours, and the ship, 24 hours. The train, on the other will going to complete a one-way journey in three hours only. With the start of this railway line, there will be a better tourism opportunity for the attractions of Diglipur including exotic Ross and Smith Islands, Active Mud Volcanoes, sea-side experience at the Lamiya Bay Beach and the Kalipur Beach etc.
This railway line is expected to give a major boost to the defense and communication system also. The cost of this construction has been estimated at Rs. 2,413.68 crore.
