Do not worry if you are not getting confirmed tickets for your next trip that you are planning. The Railways have come up with an idea to help. If your waitlisted ticket doesn’t get confirmed in mail/express train that you have booked, you will be provided accommodation in an alternative train including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto. Further, if you go for this option, there will be no extra charges taken from you.
The scheme is called as ‘Vikalp’ yojna and with this scheme the Indian Railways aims to utilize the vacant births that are left in many premier trains.
According to the reports, the Indian Railways had to sacrifice about Rs 7,500 crore in a year when they had to refund customers their amount for cancellation of tickets for various reasons.
Earlier, with the introduction of a flexi-fare system in premier trains, several berths were going vacant while at the same time the passengers were facing huge problems as they were not able to get the confirmed tickets. So, to make the amount of refund as the earnings to railways without the involvement of any additional cost, the scheme was launched.
The scheme is described as the ‘passenger friendly’ initiative to help out the customers in need. “We aim to achieve the twin objectives of providing confirmed accommodation to waitlisted passengers and ensure optimal utilisation of available accommodation by this scheme.”- an official said.
The passengers, if opts for the ‘Vikalp’ scheme while booking tickets, will get the notification alert on his/her mobile phone about the confirmed accommodation in the alternative train. There will be a separate list of passengers transferred in the alternative train along with the confirmed and waitlisted charts. The scheme will start from – 1st April and one can avail it by opting for alternate trains through the IRCTC ticketing site.
