1. Bombay - Mumbai

Mumbai was earlier called as Bombay. The city was ruled by the Portuguese back in the day. During that time, they saw the city as a natural water bay and hence started to refer to the place as – Bom Bhaia which in Portuguese means “good bay”. In the year 1995, the ruling party of Shiv Sena changed the name to Mumbai to glorify the Maratha culture.

Initially, Mumbai was made up of 7 different islands – Colaba, Mazagaon, Little Colaba, Parel, Mahim, Isle of Bombay, and Worli. However, between the years of 1784 and 1845, British engineers brought all these 7 islands together and thereby unified it to be one large landmass.

3. Largest Slum

Asia’s largest slum is located in an area called Dharavi in Mumbai. These are small homes where people from low-income areas live. However, this place is so fascinating to many that they have many tours and day excursions for people to see and witness how they all live together in harmony.

The dabbawallas are Mumbai’s pride. If you get on any local station, you can find these Dabbawallas waiting to make their delivery. Started by Mahadeo Havaji Bachche in the year 1890, it was formed in order to provide, homemade meals to people who were going to offices. With an accuracy of 99.67%, they have achieved 6 stigma standards without using s a single piece of technology. This ideal delivery system has even had case studies done on by the prestigious Harvard Business School.

5. 1st Five Star Hotel

India’s 1st Five-star hotel is the Taj Mahal Palace which is located in Colaba, Mumbai. Built in the year 1903, it was the very first hotel to provide exotic offerings to its guests.

6. India’s 1st civil aviation airport

Founded in 1928, The Juhu Aerodrome was India's first civil aviation airport. JRD Tata landed at the aerodrome in 1932 and thereby inaugurating the 1st commercial mail service. It was also used as the main airport during World War 2.

7. Flamingos

Every year between the months of October – March you can see swamps of flamingos migrating in the Bhandup and Sewri regions of Mumbai. This attracts a lot of people and photographers to witness these beautiful creatures

8. Bandra – Worli Sea Link

The Bandra Worli Sea Link is made up of 90,000 tonnes of cement and steel wire which is equal to the earth’s girt. This is bridge is over the water that connects point endpoints of Bombay – Bandra, and worli.
