Spread at an expanse of 925 kilometers, Periyar national Park was developed in the year 1982.  Sitting high on the Pandalam and Cardamon Hills of the southwestern ghats, the national park has 160 kinds of butterflies, 320 avifauna species, 54 types of reptiles. It is also a tiger reserve and an elephant reserve. You can explore the forest either by taking an elephant ride or taking a car safari. It has an artificial lake flowing through it which makes it a beautiful place to spot wildlife.

Jim Corbett National Park can be found in Uttarakhand. The national park was established in the year 1936, hence making it the oldest national park in India. Formerly a British and the king’s hunting ground, the national park is now reserved to protect the tigers. Named after a British hunter and offer, the national park has a variety in wildlife. You can find tigers, jackals, foxes, chital, leopards, elephants, and panthers. There are five different safari zones that you can explore.

Kanha National Park is situated in the Maikal range of Satpura in Madhya Pradesh. The national park is spread across 940 square kilometers, including the tiger reserve, the area totals up to 1945 square kilometers. It is said that the Kanha National Park was the source of inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s famous creation – The Jungle Book. The dense forests also have abundant species such as herbs, shrubs, and climbers. The national park is also famous for spotting barasingha (swamp deer) other varieties of other animals and birds.

  • Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga National Park is located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Northeast India in Assam. Declared as a UNESCO Heritage Site, the national park is home to the largest population of rhinoceros in India. Know for the one horn rhinoceros, the national park also houses several other animals like, hog deer, wild boars, sloth bears, bison, grey head fishing eagle, honey buzzard to name a few.

  • Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

Sundarbans National Park is spread across 40,000 sq. km between India and Bangladesh. Stretching from River Hooghly in West Bengal – India to River Baleswar in Bangladesh. The name Sundarban means beautiful forests which is true for a reason. The national park is a tiger reserve, national park, and biosphere reserve. In 1987, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. In a dense mangrove forest, you can find saltwater crocodiles, tigers, and other animals. You can also find birds like whistling teals and brahminy kites. 

  • Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat

Home to the Asiatic lions, besides Africa it is only here where you can see lions roam freely. The dry and deciduous atmosphere makes it the perfect place for Asiatic Lions. It has 523 lions and more than 300 leopards. You can also see two different types of deers – Samabr ( largest Indian deer) and chowsingha (4 horned antelop). There are also many exotic birds and reptiles and amphibians – Saw scaled viper, krait and the king cobra.
