Hallstatt Day Trip from Vienna

Long day but scenery is amazing

Breathtaking town. It is something to see for sure. They were kind enough to pick us up at the hotel. The bus was nice enough and air conditioned. The guide was ok. It was a short and congested boat ride.

Pretty picturesque place but…

It’s a very beautiful little town stunning scenery and architecture but there’s nothing to do other than wander around and see the waterfall. If you go get there early, we arrived 9.30am and it was reasonably quiet in early June but by 11.30am it was filling up quickly mainly with hoards of Japanese tourists. It’s also a tourist rip off place parking’s extortionate as are the restaurants and cafes, €12 for a pancake 🙄 really! Take note! all the businesses only take cash and the Atm’s charge a shocking fee to withdraw cash, and I didn’t see a mention of a charge before hand. I was charged €6.50 for withdrawing €50. If I had the choice again I wouldn’t bother going.

Beautiful but rainy

Long ride from Vienna. Stopped at a location for breakfast and dinner. Very crowded in Hallstatt. The views were amazing and beautiful spot.

Beautiful place but overcrowded and unwelcomed.

Pro : Amazing view, lovely little place and beautiful lake. Cons: too crowded. Cannot even take any picture with so many people. Restaurants options are not many and all full. Locals are not friendly and wish no one would visit the place if possible (too noisy for them). I would recommend you visit other more accommodating places. Tourists are not welcome in Hallstatt by locals

If you value your sanity…

If you value your sanity, do not take this trip. You will spend 10 hours on a bus and 3 hours in Hallstatt. You are better off taking the train direct there and back from Vienna.

Disappointing

The booking indicates a small group of no more than 8 people. I even contacted Viator to make sure it was a small group and the operartor, J. Ma. Beatriz, who confirmed in writing this information. She indicated the following "I was able to check on this and it shows that under this booking there are 4 travelers included on this. But the maximum number of travelers for this is 8 travelers only, since this is a small group tour". However, the group was comprised of approximately 15 people. The tour guide was never with us during the entire tour in Hallstatt. He gave us instructions and information upon arrival and said we would gather again around 3 p.m. by the pier to go on the boat ride around the lake and then we would return to Vienna. In other words, he left us on our own to discover the town. This was not what we were promised or expected based on the description of this tour or the Viator agent. Very disappointing!

Breathtakingly beautiful

Long but well worth the trip to Hallstatt. If you're getting over the major cities and their grand castles, churches and other monuments like we were that Hallstatt is a breath of fresh air. Beautiful scenery and classic Austrian village. The sort you see on biscuit tins. Very relaxing to just take it all in. We would definitely recommend this trip.

The trip is overall...

The trip is overall expensive as you mainly pay for the bus ride and little information. My guide was not that friendly, the bus had no charging points and stopped for long durations on the way which was a waste of time. Total day trip is 13 hours of which 3 - 3.5 hours were spent in Hallstatt and total 1 hour of mid stops at service points. Nonetheless, Hallstatt is very beautiful and must see so if you can find more affordable method of getting there, I would suggest that

It was a good tour

It was a long trip. Reaching Hallstatt would not be possible for us without this tour. We reached in around 4 hours as there was traffic. The tour was nice, the guide explained things and took us to a short tour and then later we had our free time. Fyi, though bus journey was comfortable enough, no water bottles or wifi was provided. So better carry a bottle of water. There are stops, so you will be able to buy breakfast or water bottles. We surely had a good day.

The day trip to Hallstatt was amazing! The boat ride was conveniently arranged. There was also plenty of time to see the place on your own. What a lovely picturesque town!

The tour guide was a very...

The tour guide was a very poor communicator. Overall, very average experience. hallstatt is beautiful but not worth spending 8 hours in the bus.

The guide was very lazy - his English was very poor. We didn’t understand a word he spoke. It was a disaster for us

The trip was great! This place were magical. The staff and bus driver were so accommodating and they put importance on time.

Hallstat day trip from Vienna.

Hallstat was spectacular...beautiful. But the price was too high...nothing was included. A lot of money for 7 hours on the bus...plus had to buy meals where they stopped plus tickets for vinicular.

Hallstatt

Such a fantastic trip to Hallstatt. From our guide Alexander and our amazing driver Jasmine a trip well worth doing. Amazing scenery. So worthwhile

Too long a trip in the winter months.

The town is charming but it is clearly not meant to be visited in the winter. Most restaurants, cafes and stores are closed. Does not pay to be on a bus for 4 hours each direction for such a limited visit. Also the 45minutes breaks in each direction were also much too long.

Beautiful destination

Large bus with comfortable seats and big windows, rest stop there & back. Lots of information about the destination including archeology/paleontology, which was quite interesting. Short guided walk in town to see bone room at local church, then 3-4 hrs to explore on own. Unfortunately several of the suggestions were not available, which seems odd to not be more up to date. Beautiful area & stunning lake views. Basically you’re paying for transportation. Would’ve rather skipped the dinner stop on way back to arrive sooner back to Vienna. Highly recommend seeing Hallstatt!!

totally worth it!

Really worth it if you have a day to spend, magical scenery, really feels like you’re in a fairytale. The tour was very good, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, the bus was very comfortable. I would also like to mention, that due to my mistake, I missed the tour on the original date. The company went out of their way to find an opening to accommodate us a couple of days later even though they didn’t have to. Thank you for that magical day, my wife and kids loved it!

Disappointing

I would not recommend to travel with this operator, since we were called to pay for admission fee, which was mentioned in the program to be included. Additionally one landmark which was also in the program was overpassed

Not to be missed!

Our guide, Stefan, was funny, entertaining, and informative. I like that he kept us on track and let those who were late coming back to be mindful of others. This day trip should not be missed if you’re within a 3 hour drive!

Beautiful scenery, horrible people

I had a wonderful experience with our tour guide and bus driver, however, I would like to warn other people of the horrible experience I had with the local people of Hallstatt. I have never in my life felt more unwelcome, hated, judged and simply mistreated by every single local. From the moment you interact with them it is very obvious that they do not want you there. Rude and angry is an understatement to describe them. It is a shame that such a beautiful place can be filled with such a dark, heavy energy thanks to the rudeness of their people. Once again, I would like to state that this review is not a reflection of Viator, our tour guide or our bus driver, but rather of a warning to people considering going. Will never be visiting anywhere near this place again.

Good Tour of Hallstatt

Tour operator was good enough to pick up from the hotel. The Tour was good and the guide provided excellent details As per the tour we booked for the tour along with the skywalk, but the tickets to the transportation by the cable car was not provided. And due to a long queue at the ground station no one from this trip could go to the skywalk.

Limited visitor Halstatt community experience

Hallstat ia beautiful but visitor experience is limited to the mountain sights and salt mining view. There was lack of activities for visitor experience.

Breathtaking

AMAZING experience and a MUST SEE. What a GORGEOUS place. Plenty of time to shop and eat and just look around at everything as the place is small. Breakfast stop was delicious. Evening stop offered various options of quick food. Halstatt is just breathtaking. Tour guide was thorough, informative and gracious.

Beautiful Hallstatt

Excellent day, very organised. Such a long way but so worth it. Stunning place with beautiful views. Would 100% recommend this trip.

Must do trip .

I visited Hallstatt in late November and it was amazing experience. The road trip was a bit long and monotonic but our coach had charging facility so bring mobile charger with you. Toilet was also on board in case you have to use it , but there are two stops on the way . All toilets are charged for so make sure you bring credit card or coins. In Hallstatt we had plenty free time. The tour operator took the group when we arrived for a walking tour. I skipped that as I was worried I will not have enough time to do the skywalk. It was plenty of time to do both actually. The Sky walk is a walking distance from drop of point. Ticket is about 20€ and the small mountain train takes you upstairs. There are stunning view from there and two restaurants where you can grab some food , snacks or hot wine. Please bare in mind in Hallstatt there is not many proper restaurants , mostly snacks like sandwiches or cakes.

A great day out!

We were picked up from our hotel.Which made things very easy. Taken to meeting point where we were met by Christopher our tour guide. His knowledge and leadership were outstanding. The bus journey was broken up with a break for breakfast which was wonderful. Arriving in Hallstatt for lunchtime. Four hours to walk around the beautiful village and take in the breathtaking views. Would recommend this trip. A magical day out. Thank you so much to Christopher and the bus driver.

The most beautiful lake in the world!

This is a must-do trip. Long bus ride from Vienna but well worth it. Amazing views of the Alps and lake. Tons of shops and dining options. Amazing!

Didn’t care for the tour guide we had. He was slightly impatient but the actual city was breathtaking and felt like you are walking in a fairytale book

Must see you In Austria - Beautiful Place

Hallstatt has a very different charm about itself. Easily the most beautiful village. Had fun with friends and met new people. More time in the main centre would help. Guide was decent too. Well organised.

Postcard Town

I did 5 tours while in Austria and this one was hands down my favorite. There’s enough time in Hallstatt to do the skywalk which I recommend.

Wonderful Trip

A wonderful day trip, highly recommend! The skylift was stunning and worth the 22EURO. Give yourself time - there is a cute cafe at the top.

Wonderful Scenery - And A Huge Tourist Trap.

The scenery is one of a kind. Unfortunately, it has become a large tourist trap. Too many people - some are loud and some are inching their way get their IG poses, regardless. What may used to be a serene place to visit has now become a place to waste more money that I was surprised that water on tap is not being offered in restaurant. I have learned that during my recent travel to EU, tips are no longer voluntary for services - it is being asked for and sometimes being demanded. Such a shame. But, nevertheless, we enjoyed the scenery, except for unruly and sometimes rude tourists that we have encountered.

Very expensive to have a bad guide. But the place is MAGICAL

Hallstatt is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. However, this tour was expensive to have a guide reading a wikipedia sheet fact. I was expecting a real professional guide to talk about the history and tell about real stories from the tour. It would be much cheaper and better to take a tour with only the transport

Worth the bus travel

Awesome. It was well worth the long travel on comfortable motorcoach. Well organized. A must see if you have a free day away from Vienna

Awesome excursion and scenery.

Guide was excellent. Prefer that tour be in English only. One German couple so guide spoke German as well as English. Complication was that the German couple missed our boat connection so we all had to go back to Hallstatt to find the couple. Lost 45-60 minutes due to them not listening.

Would have passed, given the travel time

Not worth the trip from Vienna. Maybe go if you stay in Salzburg. Too little time in Hallstatt town given the 8 hours travel time (round trip including the total of 90 minutes in two rest stops off the highway) if you want anything other than a takeaway bite for lunch. Boat ride 15 minutes. Pretty, but underwhelming. Bus only had power/USB at every other seat. All around would not recommend, not due to the tour company but solely due to the above practicalities.

The place is so beautiful, the tour was so dull

It's most likely you'll leave Hallstatt feeling over the moon. However, it's not due to the guide's involvement, it's simply because the place is divine. Now the reasons behind my 2 stars are mostly because I genuinely don't understand where the expenses go, I'll give it that it's a long drive, and the guide certainly didn't make it easier because she kept going on about what started off as interesting but was too long-winded to keep paying attention to that it ended up being exhausting. You pay for the transport and the 10-15 minute boat trip! Additionally, we were approximately 70 people, it felt like factory-tourism and it was too expensive for that! There was no room for any personalisation, it felt like a school day trip with a students that just met up and a teacher that didn't care to know anything about them! Also, the time we had at Hallstatt wasn't enough to scratch the surface, you had to choose what to do because we couldn't do more than 1 activity, and the office wasn't affiliated with any museum/restaurant/ etc (unlike all of the tours I've been to yet). For me it was my 2nd time in Hallstatt, I know the potential that this town has and I know it's not hard to leave feeling amazed and over the moon, but even though we left it knowing it was a day to remember, I feel like it left the office feeling like they didn't need to plan anything other than a pickup and dropoff to contribute to the natural experience that is to be had in this beautiful town. Out of all of my experiences with day tour providers, I'd rate this as my most independent, most restrictive, and poorest in terms of what we could have done vs what we actually could do.

Easy visit in quaint town

A must visit little town. Straight out a fairytale story with swans on the lake and flowers in Bavarian styled windows. Our guide was very pleasant but I think we could have done the trip on our own. I'm not sure if there's much of transportation to here from Vienna but that's all this tour is. If you can get yourself there, you can also buy your own ferry tickets if you want which will bring you across the lake for a scenic view of the place. The town is stunning but a guide is not needed to explore as it is one road in and out. It doesn't take away from anything as we had a wonderful time but I am merely suggesting you could do it on your own as well.

Nice trip

It's very nice trip. We go with family and some customers. The tour guide is so nice and whether is amazing. I hope to have more time like stay couple days in Hallstatt to enjoy more.
